Mosaic Columns CELEBRATING DIVERSITY
The mosaic sculptures at the entrance to the school were funded through a grant from Openlands and were designed constructed working with artist Julia Stiles-Barlow from Chicago Public Art Group. They represent the amazing diversity of cultures present at Hayt School, with students hailing from over 35 countries!
The project began with an examination of textiles from these many countries. Students brought in clothing and fabrics that represented their culture. In art class, students observed the textiles for patterns and created sketches of what they saw. These sketches were then given to the artist, who collaged the students' drawings together to make the basis for the tile mosaic. Below you will see examples of the textiles and student sketches.

In the second phase of the project, students got to have hands-on experience working with the tile. Older students helped to break the ceramic tile into small pieces and fit the tile into the final patterns to be used on the columns. Younger students were able to use the tile pieces to create the members of their family. Their "families" were used inside mirrored bands of tile that criss-cross the columns. The artist took all the student work back to her studio where it was combined to form the overall design of the sculptures.
Orchard Fence Murals
These outdoor murals are located on the fruit orchard fence in the northeast corner of Hayt's campus. They were funded through a Chicago Cares school beautification project and were designed and painted by Chicago artist Andy Young with the help of Chicago Cares volunteers. They feature Hayt students working in the school garden, playing soccer, and our school playground.
Student Self portraits mural
This mural features a collage of student self portraits. It was funded by a Chicago Cares project and completed by the students in the Hayt Mural Club.
