Kindergarten has been examining texture. We looked at items of all different textures and tried to name words to describe how they felt. Each student was given a texture envelope containing 7 different texture items. We played a texture game, using only our sense of touch to try to pick out the items that matched our descriptive words. "Can you find the slick piece? The rough? Silkly? Bumpy, squishy?" The kids had lots of fun playing this game, then we did crayon rubbings of the pieces. During the next class we did more rubbings of texture plates and the bottom of our shoes!
Kindergarteners used their texture rubbings to make an insect collage. They learned about the three main body parts of an insect: head, thorax, and abdomen. Their beatle collages also include six legs and antennae! Primary students are learning about symmetry and recognizing it in the world around them. We looked at the book Seeing Symmetry to help their understanding. We first focused our study on butterflies. Students were shown how to fold their papers on the line of symmetry and apply paint to only one side of the line. Through the magic of symmetry the paint jumps to the other side when the paper is folded and rubbed. 1,2,3,Symmetry! Great fun! We also reviewed concepts of color mixing in this project. During the next class period, students viewed a Power Point of numerous images and were asked to find the lines of symmetry. Some objects had vertical, horizontal, or numerous lines of symmetry, while some examples were not symmetrical at all! They really enjoyed this challenge! After the review, students created a leaf using the same symmetrical painting process. Both the leaf and butterfly will be cut and assembled together. Second graders learned the print making process and created multiple prints of their animal in various colors. They choose their favorite three prints to be mounted together for display. Their understanding of the printmaking process was assessed through a sequencing activity accompanied by a writing exercise. See examples of their amazing wor below! |
