Second graders have been studying insects in science, so we thought it would be f un to use all that printed paper we made to create huge beetles. We reviewed all the parts of the insect: head, thorax, abdomen, antennae, 6 legs, compound eyes, and inner and outer wings. We cut all of these parts ourt of our printed paper and assembled them to make amazing, flying beetles. We used The Beetle Book for inspiration. Take a look at our insects below.
This was a super fun, one day project with kindergarten and first grade. We read the book "ish" by Peter Reynolds which is about a boy that is discouraged about making artwork because his drawings don't come out right. He comes to realize that his drawings don't have to be perfect, they can look "vase-ish, sun-ish, boat-ish...". As a class we talked about always using kind words about others artwork and not making anyone feel bad about their art. Then I gave each student a small sheet of paper with a few lines or shapes that I had pre-drawn with Sharpie. Their job was to use crayon to turn the drawing into something "-ish". The project was tons of fun and they got to begin their own "-ish" drawings with marker, which they traded with each other to complete with crayons. See their adorable drawings below. |
