Primary students celebrated the Winter Olympics by designing snowboards, creating pipe cleaner athletes, and making a slopestyle course out if paper. We began this project by viewing a short video (linked below) of slopestyle snowboarding, which is a mixture of snowboarding and skateboarding. Students were then shown several examples of snowboard designs and we discussed a possible career as a snowboard artist. Students then designed their own "snowboard" using markers on wide popsicle sticks. Working in small groups, students were shown how to create a shown how to make a person using pipe cleaners which were glued on their boards.
During the next art class, students were challenged to make their figure balanced and to give it joints such as knees and elbows. We then looked at images of snowboards, trying to copy their poses with our own bodies, then the pipe cleaner figure. Students then used paper sculpting techniques to make their own slopestyle snowboarding course. This project was super fun!
