First graders have been studying Henri Matisse and his paper cut collages. We have been focusing on his use of geometric and organic shapes. We noticed that he used geometric shapes mostly in the background and organic shapes on top, such as in the artwork The Lagoon, shown below. We tried to duplicate this layering of shapes in our own paper cuts, but each creating our own unique designs!
Kindergarten began this project with a study of different kinds of lines. Straight, wavy, zig zag, scallops, broken... They used various colors of paint to fill circles with lines of the various styles. The next class period they cut out the circles and added petals to create spring flowers! Second grade students are learning about endangered animals. We started this unit by learning about Jane Goodall and her work with chimpanzees. Students were Also studying Jane Goodall in their home room classes. We expanded the discussion to include endangered animals from around the world. Animals become endangered because of human interactions such as over hunting, poaching, and destruction of habitat. Students choose an endangered animal and did several practice sketches. They choose their best sketch to transfer onto styrofoam which we will be inked and printed in upcoming classes. We will examine the endangered animal series by the artist Andy Warhol for color inspiration. See their works in progress below. Kindergarten students learned about color mixing using Model Magic Clay. They first learned about the primary and secondary colors and how to use the color wheel. The book Mouse Paint and the OK Go Primary Colors video helped to reinforce these ideas. They then mixed primary colors of clay to make the secondary colors. It took lots of kneading and twisting to make even colors. As a bonus, they learned that by mixing in white clay, it would make the original color lighter. Students rolled their clay into spheres that were made into necklaces in a later class. |
