First graders have started amazing pumpkin paintings! We first spent some time examining the parts, shape, and lines we found on a real pumpkin. Students did their best to draw huge pumpkins based on our observations. We also read the book Pumpkin Jack by Will Hubbel to gain an understanding of the life cycle of a pumpkin and help understand the parts we were drawing. Students then reviewed how to make the color orange. Most everyone remembered from kindergarten how to mix yellow and red by using the color wheel! (Proud art teacher moment.) Check out some of their paintings in progress below. Mixing colors is great fun!
Kindergarten was read the book "The Very Busy Spider" by Eric Carle. We talked about what we knew about spiders: they have eight legs, they eat flies, and the make webs to catch their food. Students were shown how to draw spider webs by drawing lines from the center of a square paper to the four corners, and then the four sides. They were shown how to jump around the web to each of the lines to create the circular part of the web. Webs were finished by coloring with construction paper crayons in AB patterns. We also added 3D paper spiders and flies! Kindergarten had a great time learning about sculpture by making a stuffed paper pumpkins. A sculpture is an artwork that we can see from all sides, it's not flat like a painting. Students enjoyed turning flat paper bags and newspaper into jackolanterns. See some of their sculptures below. Kindergarten started there first art project of the year reading by hearing a read alound of "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds. They practiced their tracing skills by tracing small, medium, and large circles on their paper. They were taught how to overlap the shapes and put circles inside of other circles. During the next art class, kinders learned about all different kinds of lines. We read "Lines That Wiggle" By Candice Whitman. They then worked with crayon to fill the circles they drew during the last class with line patterns. The last step to this project was to use liquid watercolor paint to add more color. This was kindergartens first time painting in art class. They practiced wearing their aprons, sharing paint, and proper painting technique. See the results of all their work below! |
