Sixth graders study Ancient Greece and Rome in social studies, so we thought we would take a look at the three main types of columns: Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. We learned the names if each style and practiced identifying them in contemporary architecture. Then we focused on the most ornate of the columns, Corinthian. In ancient times the leaf decoration was inspired by the acanthus leaf, ours were inspired by various plants and animals and student projects found online. Symmetry achieved through a transfer process, focus on detail, and bold colors made these columns turn out amazing!
