Fifth through eighth graders are experimenting with the element of line by making Zentangle-inspired designs. Zentangles are black and white patterns that are drawn with the purpose of opening the mind to almost a meditative state. We examined several images of Zentangles noticing differences in line quality, pattern, contrast, and density of space. Students are creating their own Zentangles in the negative space around a drawing of their initial. Amazingly most classes have been almost entirely silent while making their designs! They are really getting into the Zentangle mindset! Stay tunned to see their finished drawings!
Continuing our study into careers in art, seventh grade students are experimenting with interior designs. They at working in pairs to create rooms, integrating their cardboard chairs from our furniture design project into the room. They could choose any theme they wanted for the rooms, and they are very diverse! Designs range from a One Direction room, to a barber shop, to a room in an underground bunker! Take a look at their works below! Sixth graders study Ancient Greece and Rome in social studies, so we thought we would take a look at the three main types of columns: Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. We learned the names if each style and practiced identifying them in contemporary architecture. Then we focused on the most ornate of the columns, Corinthian. In ancient times the leaf decoration was inspired by the acanthus leaf, ours were inspired by various plants and animals and student projects found online. Symmetry achieved through a transfer process, focus on detail, and bold colors made these columns turn out amazing! Eighth grade, room 306, requested to do a Tshirt logo design project. We began by drawing as many logos from well know companies as possible. Then we examined the logos to try to determine what made them memorable, and therefore successful. Students then went about designing their own logos that somehow represented themselves. Students were taught how to make stencils using freezer paper. Seventh grade, room 305, was so taken by the other class's plushies that we are trying to squeeze making some in before the end of the school year. In progress below... Eight grade, room 307, has been creating masks. We looked at masks from several differenct cultures to begin this project, then students were let loose to come up with their own designs. We used mask forms and Claycrete to build the structure of the masks and then painted them with acrylic paint. The architecture projects are finished and on display in the stairways. They look great integrated with structures made for the Chicago History Fair. Two of the sculptures were included in the All City Elementary Art Show and The Elephants with Riders Art Show at Northside College Prep. Seventh grade students tried their hand at furniture design by making chairs from cardboard. We looked at several examples of contemporary furniture made from cardboard for inspiration. In designing their chairs students had to consider style, function, balance, strength, and craftsmanship. They came up with some amazing designs!
Eight grade students have been experimenting with architecture by creating group projects made from stacked boxes. Groups must work together to make a structures that are as tall as a person, balanced, freestanding, and sturdy. Here is an example of some works in progress, check back to see them in their completed form!
